Did you know? MGM's famous 1939 The Wizard of Oz is a remake? Actually, it's the 3rd remake!
This 100 year old+ silent classic is the earliest known (and earliest surviving) film version of L. Frank Braum's original 1900 novel, though it also borrows elements from the 1902 stage musical adaptation.
This masterpiece was actually made solely to fulfil a contract, as Braum himself went bankrupt and lost the rights to his work. Despite this, it features wonderful sets, great dancing and acrobatics, superb visual effects (for the time) and buckets of charm.
The credits to the film are lost, as are, unfortunately, it's sequels Dorothy and the Scarecrow in Oz, The Land of Oz and John Dough and the Cherub, all released in 1910.
