Bride of the Gorilla (1951)
Description
There's a killer gorilla on the loose in the Amazonian Rainforest, and the locals are frightened! And confused, because you don't get gorillas in America. Mind you, he's only on screen for about 4 minutes., so maybe it balances out?
Taking place in a Dutch plantation... so I'm guessing Suriname, lying, murdering fan-of-slavery Barney Chavez (Raymond Burr) kills his employer Klass Van Gelder (Paul Cavanagh) in order to get to Van Gelder's estranged wife, Dina (Barbara Payton). Police Commissioner Taro (Lon Chaney Jr.) and Dr. Viet (Tom Conway) are on the case to make Barney pay... but so is the jungle, and the black magic of the witch Al-Long (Gisela Werbisek).
It's a long series of dramatic descriptions of what the gorilla is supposed to be doing, and I'm not kidding about how little it's actually on screen, and the only reason I can think of for picking a gorilla for a South American set film is they had the suit already. Disappointing, but vaguely interesting in that in 1951 there were still Dutch plantations in South America, and you get a teeny tiny taste of what that... probably wasn't like at all, actually.
