House on Haunted Hill (1959)
Description
One of the greatest horror masterpieces of all time you will ever have the privilege to see, eccentric millionaires Frederick and Annabelle Loren (Vincent Price and Carol Ohmart) invite a diverse group of people to the house on haunted hill. Locked in with the "ghosts", the doors like that of a vault and solid steel, the windows bared and set in stone, no telephone and no neighbours, the guests must survive just one night to win an unbelievable $10,000. All they have to do... is stay alive.
The mystery and intrigue of this low-budget masterwork is immediately gripping and haunting, the performances genuine (particularly those of our two leads, Carolyn Craig as Nora Manning and Elisha Cook as Watson Pritchard) and the practical effects still effective in their horror.
Designed to be somewhat interactive, the original airing of the film featured a prop skeleton that would swoop down upon the audience at the perfect, startling moment. Cook also addresses the audience to bookend the film to draw the audience in.
